Tired of being told who to vote for?! How about voting for principled leadership?

Election day is nearing. Like so many others no doubt, I have already made up my mind. No amount of promises on the campaign trail, manifestos and debates can convince me that our countries should be guided and lead by anyone other than the most principled of leaders. Leaders that are able to subsume their egos for a commitment to the greater good; leaders that show compassion and humanity; ‘servant leaders’ who have the humility to acknowledge their mistakes and take seriously their responsibilities towards others when in office.

It might seem that indeed no candidate embodies that principled leadership — or, at the very most, some do so more than others. But, it seems to me that, in these troubled times, demanding that our decisions be guided by a higher principle than ego or self-interest is as necessary for our leaders as it is for those who vote for them. Our choices must be based on a higher and larger view of mankind and one that gets self out of the way in the pursuit of the largest good for the greatest number.

I am not allowed to vote in the UK elections, having lived abroad for more than 16 years. And it frustrates me that, as a Brit living in Europe with a background in China and an awareness of a quickly changing geopolitical order, I have had no say in an issue as…
